August Classroom Themes and Activities!

National days and monthly themes are a great way to inform students about different world issues, traits, and other important events! Scroll down to check out our list of August themes, activities, and how you can use The Character Tree to celebrate those themes with your students.

Themes to celebrate all month long!

Back to school & Get Ready for Kindergarten Month: August is the perfect month to introduce and review classroom citizenship skills like whole body listening, hand raising, and handwashing! Our classroom citizenship episodes are an excellent resource for this (Note: all of our classroom citizenship episodes are part of the kindergarten subscription, or you can purchase our classroom citizenship bundle for just $20). We also recommend our first-grade citizenship episodes about Roberto Clemente and Ashlyn So!

National Golf Month! Whether you have young golfers in your classroom or not, this is an outstanding opportunity to watch our Perseverance & Amy Bockerstette kindergarten episode. Amy is a young golfer with Down syndrome, but she does not let that get in her way. You will not want to miss this episode!

Art Appreciation! August is American Artist Appreciation Month, a fantastic chance to get young learners acquainted with some of art history’s most celebrated artists. From musicians, dancers, and painters! We recommend our Hope & Misty Copeland and Respect & Yo-Yo Ma 1st grade episodes. And although he may not be American, our Curiosity & Leonardo da Vinci episode is a great option as well.

Clean water! August is National Water Quality Month. Teach young learners why freshwater is vital to our health and environmental needs. Celebrate with our Empathy & Ryan Hreljac kindergarten episode!

Dogs! August is National Dog Month (arguably the most PAW-some month of the year)! Dogs not only make great family members, but they also make great teammates. Our Teamwork & Togo and Teamwork & Service Dogs first-grade episodes are a must-watch in August.

Other Days in August to Celebrate with Your Students:

Aviation Day! National Aviation Day is on August 19th. It is also Orville Wright’s birthday, the first person ever to fly an airplane. Our Teamwork & The Wright Brothers first-grade episode is the perfect episode to teach your students about aviation history.

Friendship! The second Sunday of August is Friendship Day. Help your students celebrate the joy of making friends and being a friend. Our Being a Friend kindergarten episode is the perfect episode to help reinforce kindness, acceptance, and appreciation. This episode is part of our classroom citizenship bundle and our kindergarten subscription.
